2009 LSS ELECTION INFORMATION
Nominations

Nominations for the LSS Executive, Academic Issues Caucus, Student Affairs Caucus, Careers Committee and Valedictorian will open on February 2nd, 2009.

Nomination forms will be available on Monday, February 2nd and will be found on the LSS Bulletin Board, located just outside of the Distribution Centre.  5 student signatures will be required for a complete nomination.

Completed nomination forms are to be posted on the LSS Bulletin Board.  Nomination forms should not be posted before Monday, February 2nd.

Nominations close at 5 PM on Monday, February 9th, 2009.

Campaigning
POSTERING AND/OR DISTRIBUTION OF PRINTED/EMAIL/FACEBOOK GROUP CAMPAIGN MATERIALS IS NOT PERMITTED.  If you are a candidate please advise your friends that they also cannot campaign for you.

Each student will have the choice of emailing a photo and a statement to Kelsey Thompson kelc50@hotmail.com, by Friday February 6th,  which will be posted on the LSS bulletin board by the distribution centre, or making their own 8.5 x 11 inch poster, which can only be posted once on the LSS bulletin board.

Speeches
Election speeches for contested positions will be held Tuesday February 10th, 2009 in Room 169 between 12:30 - 1:30 PM.

Voting
Voting will begin on Tuesday, February 10th and will run until Friday, February 13th.  The polling station will be open from 10am to 3:00pm, except Tuesday polling stations will not open until the speeches are complete and Friday they will close at 1:30 for counting.

Election results to be announced at the Friday February 13th, 2009.

Positions

Executive Positions

President- The LSS President represents all LSS members, leads the LSS Executive, and sits as a non-voting member on the two main student government bodies- The Student Affairs Caucus (SAC) and the Academic Issues Caucus (AIC).  The President, in conjunction with the LSS Exec, serves as the point of external communication for student government.  The LSS Exec is made up of executive members of the SAC and AIC and mainly serves to facilitate communication between those bodies and approve the LSS budget.

VP Student Affairs- The chair, the official representative of SAC and the tie-breaking vote on that body.  This position is also responsible for organizing the largest, most entrenched social events at the school, including the salmon BBQ, boat cruise and the trike race.  The VP-SA serves on the LSS Exec.

VP Academic- The chair, the official representative of AIC and the tie-breaking vote on that body.  This position is the leading student spokesperson on academic matters, determines the procedure by which student seats on faculty committees are chosen and selects chairpersons of students committees and town-halls.  The VP-Academic serves on the LSS Exec.

Senator- The Senate is UBC’s highest academic-governing body, chaired by the UBC President Stephen Toope and Includes all faculty deans, several dozen professors, senior UBC administrators, distinguished alumni and 17 students.  The Senate approves all academic policy at UBC and hears appeals to academic discipline and admissions decisions.  The Senator serves on the LSS Exec.

Executive Director of AMS Relations- The UBC Law representative on the umbrella student government at UBC, the Alma Mater Society (AMS), which represents more than 300,000 UBC students.  The AMS runs almost all the businesses in the Student Union Building, administers the Extended Health Plan and the U-Pass, funds all sports and clubs at UBC and is the primary lobbying force for UBC students.  The ED-AMS serves on the LSS Exec.

Ombudsperson- The ombudsperson can attend any meetings of the LSS Executive, SAC or AIC, but does not vote so as to avoid potential conflicts of interest.  The position is responsible for investigating complaints of any student.  These can be complaints about any student group or government body, the faculty or administration, discrimination and harassment, the summer article and articling process, academic appeals and exam schedule conflicts.  The Ombudsperson is also responsible for organizing the “Legal Buddy” program.

Executive Director of Finance- Chair of the LSS Finance Committee, which prepares the LSS Budget for approval by the Exec  and the Annual General Meeting.  Responsible for the dispensing of all LSS funds and maintaining the accounts of the organization.  The ED-Finance serves on the LSS Exec.

Executive Director of Communications- Responsible for the LSS listserve, the LSS website, assignment of bulletin board space, outreach to exchange and transfer students, and media relations.  Also serves as LSS Exec and SAC secretary and has the unenviable responsibility of maintaining the LSS office.  The ED-Comm serves on the LSS Exec.

Director of Sports, Clubs and Development- Responsible for the Orientation Week Clubs Day, communicating with all sports and clubs at the school, and scheduling and operating bzzr-ups.

AIC Positions

Directors of Academic Issues (4 Positions)- The heart of the AIC, the Directors of Academic Issues are focussed upon giving students a voice on Faculty Council and its committees, as well as leading student committees and town halls.  In addition, one of the DIAs will serve as Secretary to the AIC.  Students may simultaneously run for VP Academic and Academic Issue director, but if a candidate wins both positions they will be deemed to have automatically declined their position as DIA.

Director of Aboriginal and Academic Issues- Being someone who self-identifies as Aboriginal, serves as the student representative on the First Nations Faculty Council Sub Committee, as well as performs all the duties of a DIA.  This position is contingent on the Constitutional amendment being passed at the AGM on Thursday January 29th.

Chairperson- Responsible for chairing meetings, preparing an agenda beforehand, and liaising regularly with CSO , ensures the organization of, and oversees all CC events, sits on the LSS Executive as an ex officio member  and collect brief reports from each CC rep
