  • The Articling Committee
  • The Law & Business Society

Position Descriptions

Academic Issues Caucus (AIC) First Year Representatives: As a first year rep, you will act as the liaison between the first year class and the Faculty on matters of academic importance. You will sit on Committees that are responsible for issues which range from improving the UBC Law curriculum to the appointment of new professors to the Faculty. First year reps are also responsible for organizing information events such as Beyond First Year, a look at selecting upper year courses. Joining AIC is a great way to get involved with the school and to stay in touch with important developments around UBC Law. You’ll also have the opportunity to work closely with Faculty for the benefit of the school.

Student Affairs Caucus (SAC) First Year Representatives - First year reps are
involved in helping plan and organise social events at the school.  You are required
to come to the weekly SAC meetings (Wednesday at
1:00-1:30), help sell tickets and
promote events, make weekly announcements in class about LSS news, volunteer for
set-up, running and cleaning up events, and generally act as the first year ambassadors
for the social affairs caucus.  It is a great experience and can often be tons of fun!

Law & Business Society First Year Representatives – First year reps of the UBC Law
& Business Society act as the official liaison between the Law and Business Society
and the entire first year class.  They are also responsible for advertising and marketing
Law and Business Society events to the law school.  First year reps are an integral part
of organizing these events, which include a prominent speaker series, firm tours and
social activities, such as ski trips.
Through organizing the events, they voice their opinion about the future of business
law and how they would like to see the club develop.  They will attend weekly meetings
with the other executives to accomplish furthering the goals of the Law & Business Society.
Becoming a First-year rep is a great stepping stone to eventually taking a main position on
the executive and networking with downtown law firms.

Articling Committee (AC) First Year Reps - First year reps act as the face of the AC to first years.  You're involved in helping organize events and panel presentations throughout the year and working with Career Services to improve the quantity and quality of job prospects for fellow LSS members.  You're expected to attend weekly AC meetings, help promote events, make announcements in class, and volunteer for set-up, running, and cleaning up of events.  Being a part of the 20-person team is an awesome way to get involved and make connections in the legal community!
