What is the LSS Executive?
The LSS Executive meets monthly and acts as the coordinating body between the Academic Issues Caucus and the Student Affairs Caucus. It is comprised of three members from each caucus and is chaired by the LSS President. The purpose of the executive is to ensure communication and to coordinate activities between the two bodies. The executive is also who the external administration contacts to communicate with the student government.
The members of the Executive are the President, the VP Student Affairs, the VP Academic, the Executive Director of Finance, the Senator, the Executive Director of AMS Relations and the Executive Director of Communications. The Ombudsperson, who is available to all students to go to with their concerns and problems, also sits on the Executive but is non-voting.
2009/2010 Executive
President: Ted Murray
[tedmurray(at)hotmail(dot)com]
Our dear leader has quenched his thirst for power with his victory with this year’s election campaign. Despite what may have been alleged during the campaign, he does not suffer from the Napoleon complex. This is defined by Urban Dictionary as: “A personality complex that consists of power trips and false machismo to make up for short height and feelings of inferiority.” Clearly, none of these attributes apply to our dear leader. Umm, anyhow, Ted’s more than happy to hear about any ideas or concerns you might have this year, particularly if they involve strategies for conquering the immense land mass of Russia.
VP Academic: Kate Phipps
[kphipps(at)alumni(dot)sfu(dot)ca]
Last spring, Kate was elected Vice President Academic of UBC’s LSS. This makes her your go-to-woman for any concerns you may have with faculty, curriculum, grading, and other academic matters. It also serves as confirmation that she is, in fact, a nerd amongst nerds. Last year, she interviewed your potential professors on the Appointments Committee. This year, she sits on Faculty Council and the Curriculum Committee.
Kate grew up in the Kootenays, and has a degree in Communications from Simon Fraser University. She is only mildly embarrassed that the Simpson’s makes fun of her major. Despite her innate nerdiness, before law school, she managed a bar downtown and studied nightclubs and youth social networks.
With the right invite, Kate is happy to put her expertise in the Vancouver nightlife community to use. She is also eager to address any questions or concerns you may have regarding the law school’s academic matters.
VP Student Affairs: Yun Li
[yli205(at)interchange(dot)ubc(dot)ca]
Yun is an Asian-Kiwi who missioned from Auckland, New Zealand three years ago but has maintained her passion for sheep, "shrimp on the barbie" and smashing good times. Yun studied psychology and biology before law, and conducted extensive research with microscopic worms in the area of FASD. She is an Aries, her passion in life is eating, and her blood type-B positive-matches her general view of life! In her spare time, Yun likes to parade around in her 120kg custom-made, mock-obesity prosthesis and ponder over why life is so rad. Yun is in love with law school and everyone in it and is thus working on a petition to legalize polyandry. An advocate for exercising in spandex, Yun encourages you to challenge her to any sports where balls, bets and beers are involved.
Exec Director of AMS Relations: Dia Montgomery
[writedia(at)gmail(dot)com]
Dia is a third year student at UBC Law. An import from the Sunshine State lucky enough to also be a Canadian citizen, she happily traded lightening storms and stretches of sand to hang with her peeps in a glorious block of gray concrete. As Executive Director of AMS Relations, Dia channels her inner Hillary Clinton to represent the interests of the law school at Council meetings. Aside from meeting ‘foreign dignitaries’ from other faculties, Dia enjoys scouring the classrooms for elusive outlet plugs, crimping her fellow students’ hair for the 80’s prom and sipping on sweet, sweet Florida orange juice.
Exec Director of Communications: Jan Kindler
[jan(dot)kindler(at)gmail(dot)com]
Jan Kindler is in his third year of law school. His primary responsibilities as Director of Communications include administering the LSS website and managing the student listserv email account. According to the LSS constitution he is also tasked with keeping the LSS office "tidy." He has yet to fulfill this obligation because the LSS has reneged on their constitutional duty to provide him with a feather duster, stereo recording of "Dude (Looks like a lady) performed by Aerosmith, and French maid garment and/or Bavarian lederhosen.
Exec Director of Finance: Aarash Amouzgar
[arash(dot)amouzgar(at)gmail(dot)com]

Aarash is a third year law student and a seven year UBC vetren. He currently serves the Executive Director of Finance. He is generally disconcerted at the various other connotations of the title E.D. Finance and thus prefers to be addressed as “Money Bags”. Aarash is responsible for administering the LSS budget which includes , among other things, all clubs and sports team funding. His biggest fear is invisible sharks in his pool. Aarash enjoys fiscal responsibility, Entourage, Mad Men, basketball shoes and Van Gogh Espresso on the rocks.
Senator: Michael Sami
[mikesami(at)gmail(dot)com]
Sami is back for one last kick at the CANs, and this time around he'll be representing Curtis High at the UBC Senate. Feel free to pull him aside to speak your mind if there is an issue that you feel strongly about. All topics of conversation are welcome except for Russian lands. Yeesh Ted, the most classic blunder is getting involved in a land war in Asia! Sami loves to chat about soccer, rugby and hockey, but be warned: do not utter the words "Nikolai Zherdev" in his presence.
Ombudsperson: Kimberley Fenwick
[fenwickkim(at)hotmail(dot)com]
Kimberley is a second year law student with an undergraduate degree in political science from UBC. Born and raised in Whistler, she is a deeply committed west coast girl who enjoys cooking, camping, dancing in the rain, sunshine, and sandwiches. Her greatest fear is raccoons. Kim's job as Ombudsperson is to be a helping hand with any problems you may encounter at UBC Law. Questions or concerns about faculty, students, staff, LSS, and other issues are completely confidential.
Careers Committee Chair: Rachel Ricketts
[rachellricketts(at)hotmail(dot)com]
Rachel is in her third and final (whew!) year at UBC Law and her 25th year as "that chick with the big hair". She is currently the Careers Committee Chair and an LSS Executive Member (so essentially she is now "that Chair with the big hair"). Apart from overzealously attempting to change the world one UBC law student at a time, she enjoys equality, the Food Network, high fashion, Gossip Girl, and tall, non-fat, extra hot, caramel cappuccinos (extra foam).
